📘 Paper 1 – Functional Writing, Cloze Test & Oral Skills (60 Marks)

Functional Writing (20 marks):

• Write an official letter as club secretary:

  • Accepting an invitation to a national debating extravaganza

Literary Appreciation – Excerpt (25 marks):

• Analyze an excerpt from Paul B. Vitta’s Fathers of Nations (Engineer Tahir and Ms. Mahmoud)

• Key focus areas:

  • Events leading to the excerpt (Tahir proposes date; Ms. Mahmoud declines)

  • Issues addressed (revenge/retaliation, chauvinism, gender inequality, violence, culture)

📙 Paper 3 – Imaginative Composition & Set Text Essays (60 Marks)

Imaginative Composition (20 marks):

• Option A: Write a composition beginning with: “A single glance at my watch and I knew I had missed a very important alarm…”

• Option B: Young people can play a significant role in environmental conservation of the country.

Compulsory Set Text – The Samaritan by John Lara (20 marks):

• Essay topic: “Those who resist change are bound to fail eventually.” (Focus on Mayor Mossi)

• Key points:

  • School launch – Refuses to launch App; orders halt; national government adopts it

  • Censorship – Orders newspapers bought; proposes banning; App gains more attention

  • Manipulation – Private meeting with Nicole; admits mistakes; offers bribe; she refuses

  • Enticement – Offers Nicole Director General position; she rejects; leaders arrested

Optional Set Text – A Silent Song by Leonard Kibera (20 marks):

• Essay topic: “Mbane’s experiences reveal a society that is full of pretence and falsehood.”

• Key points:

  • Ezekiel – Rescues Mbane but dumps him in flea-ridden hut; only wants him saved

  • Christians – Throw money with spite; curse him; call him able-bodied crippled by idleness

  • Sarah – Gives false hope; tells him God will be good but doesn’t believe it

  • Ezekiel again – Hypocritical pastor; verbally abuses Mbane; calls him “worse than a Judas”
