📘 Paper 1 – Functional Writing, Cloze Test & Oral Skills (60 Marks)

Functional Writing (20 marks):

• Write a book review of Blossoms of the Savannah:

  • Encourage Form Three students to read it

  • Include: Format (Heading, Title, Author, Publisher, Year, Reviewer), Plot, Themes, Characters, Styles, Strengths/Weaknesses, Conclusion

  • Proper book review format required

Cloze Test (10 marks):

• Complete a passage on Underage Drinking in Kenya, featuring:

  • Nearly one third of Form Four students take alcohol

  • Urgent message to children to say “no”

  • Negative effects of alcohol

Oral Skills (30 marks):

• Poetry Analysis – Read “Oh whisper, O my soul!” by Claude McKay

📗 Paper 2 – Comprehension, Literary Appreciation & Grammar (80 Marks)

Comprehension (20 marks):

• Read and answer questions on a passage about Courtroom Procedures in South Africa

• Topics covered:

  • Factors determining where to sit near the front

  • Seating arrangement revealing racial segregation

  • Consequences of non-observance of rules

  • Why a judge must be fearless

  • How judges earned respect (incorruptibility)

  • Limitations of judges (do not make law, bound by law)

  • Status of black people (faith in judges but not law)

  • Vocabulary: “unless such is your religion,” “precede most other men,” “laid at the door of the judge,” “a lamp set upon a stand”

Literary Appreciation – Excerpt (25 marks):

• Analyze an excerpt from Paul B. Vitta’s Fathers of Nations (Fiona and Abiola)

• Key focus areas:

  • Events before the excerpt

  • Character traits of Abiola (open/honest, keen, respectful, sacrificial, inquisitive)

  • Character traits of Fiona McKenzie (inquisitive, sarcastic)

  • Reported speech transformation

  • Question tags

  • Passive voice

  • Themes (sacrifice, honesty)

  • Stylistic devices (direct address, rhetorical questions, sarcasm)

Poetry (20 marks):

• Analyze the poem “Poem for My Sister” by Liz Lochhead

• Key focus areas:

  • Why little sister tries on shoes (admires them, fashion, they fit perfectly)

  • How we know shoes don’t fit (wobbles on high heels, hard to balance)

  • Why persona likes watching hopscotch (admires neat hops, never miss their mark)

  • Message of poem (life has challenges, youth are naive, older people concerned)

Grammar (15 marks):

📙 Paper 3 – Imaginative Composition & Set Text Essays (60 Marks)

Imaginative Composition (20 marks):

• Option A: Write a composition ending with: “… that incident taught me that not all friends are true friends.”

• Option B: Write an essay vividly describing the physical outlook of a place you wish to visit.

Compulsory Set Text – The Samaritan by John Lara (20 marks):

• Essay topic: “Teacher Nicole has undergone many challenges. However, she has overcome them making her victorious at the end.”

• Key points:

  • Political pressure – Mayor Mossi demands App shutdown; Nicole refuses

  • Professional blackmail – Principal and Bembe pressure her; she stands firm

  • Malicious arrest – Bembe arrests Nicole on trumped-up charges; she remains calm

  • Bribery and co-optation – Leaders offer Director General position; she rejects

  • Final victory – Corrupt leaders arrested; Nicole becomes symbol of integrity

Option A: Ninema by Vrenika Pather (from A Silent Song and Other Stories)

• Essay topic: “Women in business face several hardships.”

• Key points:
