📘 Paper 1 – Functional Writing, Cloze Test & Oral Skills (60 Marks)

Functional Writing (20 marks):

• Write an investigative report as the student leader in charge of students’ welfare:

  • School has experienced increased cases of students’ unrest

  • Principal appointed you Chairperson of a five-member committee

  • Investigate causes of the problem

  • Submit report in a week’s time with recommendations

  • Proper report format required (Title, Introduction, Procedure, Findings, Conclusion, Recommendations, Signing Off)

Cloze Test (10 marks):

• Complete a passage on Exam Preparation, featuring:

  • Creating a clear study timetable/schedule

  • Sticking to schedule and avoiding distractions

  • Setting realistic goals

  • Teaching others to uncover weak areas

  • Regular study in a quiet space

  • Proper time management as a success strategy

Oral Skills (30 marks):

• Oral Narrative Analysis – Read “The Disobedient Man”

  • How to make narration more effective and interesting (verbal and non-verbal cues)

  • Two ways to know audience is attentive

  • How to perform a specific line (stress, intonation, gestures)

• Intonation – Identify falling/rising intonation in sentences

• Greetings – Expressions for greeting a friend and a teacher

• Non-Verbal Cues – Appropriate body language for greeting a friend

• Homophones – Words with same pronunciation (lessen/lesson, cache/cash, where/wear, prophet/profit)

• Sound Grouping – Identify the odd one out based on pronunciation

• Discussion Skills – Aspects that make a discussion successful; shortcomings of members

📗 Paper 2 – Comprehension, Literary Appreciation & Grammar (80 Marks)

Comprehension (20 marks):

• Read and answer questions on a passage about Death, Social Media and Etiquette

• Topics covered:

  • Advantage of conveying death in case of long illness (family present, less shocked)

  • Results of conveying sudden death (screaming, punching walls, losing consciousness, going mute)

  • Need for social media etiquette around death

  • Tone (critical, disapproving, concerned, reflective)

  • Summary of despicable behaviour (conspiracy theories, stripping bereaved of private moments, character assassination)

  • Long-term effects on orphans (scared for life, affected peer interactions, negative personality impact)

  • Vocabulary: etiquette, despicable behaviour, certainly

Literary Appreciation – Excerpt (25 marks):

• Analyze an excerpt from Paul B. Vitta’s Fathers of Nations (Longway and Professor Kimani)

• Key focus areas:

  • Setting (Professor Kimani’s home)

  • Theme of change (Africa retrogressing, AGDA’s mission)

  • Character traits of Mr. Longway (informed, appreciative, inquisitive, tactical, honest, friendly, perceptive, revolutionary, judgmental, contemptuous, visionary, determined, observant)

  • Two things Longway wants Professor Kimani to do (orientation in Cape Town, attend summit in Banjul)

  • Stylistic devices (dialogue, idioms, idiophones, rhetorical questions, irony, direct address)

Poetry (20 marks):

• Analyze the poem “It’s for Real”

• Ambiguity (two meanings of sentences)

• Prepositions (pregnant for, on phone, above/beyond reproach)

• Phrasal verbs (sign up → enrol/register, pay back → revenge/avenge)

📙 Paper 3 – Imaginative Composition & Set Text Essays (60 Marks)

Imaginative Composition (20 marks):

• Option A: Write a story ending with: “… The experience still lingers in my mind as if it was yesterday.”

• Option B: Write an essay explaining how misuse of technology can be curbed.

Compulsory Set Text – The Samaritan by John Lara (20 marks):

• Essay topic: “Greed poses serious challenges in the society.” (Focus on Hon. Ramdaye)

• Key points:

  • Poor roads – Uses position to award tenders to relatives; roads look like abandoned battlefields

  • Misallocation of funds – Forces Mayor to misallocate funds for personal interests

  • Conning people – Sells fake title deeds; sells stolen university land

  • Nepotism – Employs relatives in his department

  • Bribery – Receives bribes to stay quiet about Rodengate Affair

  • Conspiracy – Part of plan to bribe Nicole with Director General position

Optional Set Texts (20 marks) – Choose ONE:

Option A: The Sins of the Fathers by Charles Mungoshi

• Essay topic: “Children greatly lose their self-esteem when their parents treat them insensitively.”

• Key points:

  • Loss of courage – Rondo unable to defend his love; courage gutted when guitar burned

  • Powerlessness – During birthday party; mango incident

  • Stammer – Never able to answer father’s questions

  • Sadness – Father frowns and spits at relationship with Selina

Option B: Parliament of Owls by Adipo Sidang

• Essay topic: “Justice and freedom can only be achieved by courageous and determined individuals.” (Focus on Osogo)

• Key points:

  • Assassination – Osogo criticizes killing of 33 weaverbirds

  • Moonlight Law – Challenges oppressive laws without fear

  • Python – Accuses royal owl of using python to kill birds

  • The Flute – Uses flute as symbol of resistance

  • Support for Oyundi – Supports overthrowing Money Bag and Royal Owl

Option C: An Artist of the Floating World by Kazuo Ishiguro

• Essay topic: “Family is important in giving wise advice that can solve a problem.”

• Key points:

  • Sachiko – Discourages negative remarks about Ono’s art career

  • Michiko – Advises Ono to find a house for marriage prospects

  • Setsuko/Ichiro – Forbids giving sake to young Ichiro

  • Setsuko – Accepts Kenji’s ashes even if mingled with comrades

  • Setsuko – Discourages Ono from blaming himself for wartime role
