  • Silent Letters – Identify silent letters (comb, parliament, leopard, gnaw)

  • Tongue Twister Analysis – “The great Greek grape growers grow great Greek grapes”

    • Classification (tongue twister)

📗 Paper 2 – Comprehension, Literary Appreciation & Grammar (80 Marks)

Comprehension (20 marks):

  • Read and answer questions on a passage about Traditional Medicine vs. Modern Medicine

  • Topics covered:

    • Characteristics of a scientific procedure (research, testing, documentation, measurement)

    • Writer’s view on divination and invocation (does not disapprove; psychological/spiritual aspect)

    • Aspect where traditional medicine is ahead (mental state of patients)

    • Hippocratic Oath (initiation and commitment process)

    • Why herbs may be unavailable (depletion of forests, pollution)

    • Why modern medicine is less accessible (shortage of doctors, expensive, transport problems)

    • Summary of reasons to abolish traditional medicine (unscientific, superstitious, quackery, unavailable, dangerous)

    • Vocabulary: gleaned, pivotal

Literary Appreciation – Excerpt (25 marks):

  • Analyze an excerpt featuring Mr. Walomu and Professor Kimani

  • Key focus areas:

    • Events before the excerpt (Professor Kimani confronts Mr. Walomu for stealing his wife)

    • Who Mr. Walomu is (Member of Parliament with three wives)

    • Stylistic devices (wise sayings, local dialect/Swahili cliché)

📙 Paper 3 – Imaginative Composition & Set Text Essays (60 Marks)

Imaginative Composition (20 marks):

  • Option B: Write a composition supporting or opposing: “Both boys and girls have equal rights to their parent’s property.”

Compulsory Set Text – The Samaritan by John Lara (20 marks):

  • Essay topic: “Most people use intimidation and blackmail to protect their selfish interests, but more often than not, their plans do not succeed.”

  • Key points:

    • Mayor Mossi – Intimidates Nicole to delete negative posts; threatens Narine; sends hooligans to disrupt meetings

    • Narine – Intimidates Nicole to abandon the App

    • Hon. Seydou – Threatens those behind corruption allegations

    • Hon. Seydou and Ted – Blackmail Mayor into approving supplementary budget

    • Hon. Basdeo – Schemes to alienate Mayor through ethnic incitement

    • Money Bags – Advances corruption; killed by Royal Owl’s orders

Option C: An Artist of the Floating World by Kazuo Ishiguro

  • Essay topic: “Yearning for reputation and social status can lead someone down to a path of fear and obsession.”

  • Key points:

    • Ono claims not to care about reputation but spends time telling us this

    • Irony lies in how much time he spends on the subject

    • Most of the novel revolves around Ono trying to ascertain his reputation

    • His insistence makes it harder to understand his social standing

    • Leads to paranoia and obsession
